There are ten series in the collection including: Series 1, Brigham Young Correspondence, 1853-1870; Series 2, Brigham Young Journals and Biographical Information, 1832-1862; Series 3, Historian’s Office Journal, 1858-1966; Series 4, Correspondences, 1852-1871; Series 5, Newspapers, circa 1850-1860; Series 6, Indians and Office of Indian Affairs, 1849-1937; Series 7, Individuals’ Biographical Information, circa 1841-1967; Series 8 Military and Camp Floyd, undated; Series 9, Mormons and the Mountain Meadow Massacre, 1830-1887; and Series 10, South West United States, 1852-1954.Brigham Young Correspondence, Brigham Young Journals and Biographical Information, Historian’s Office Journal, Newspapers, are arranged chronologically. Correspondence is listed alphabetically by author’s name, person receiving and thereafter chronologically. Individual Biographical Information, Military and Camp Floyd, Mormon/ Mountain Meadow Massacre and Southwest United States are listed by subject title alphabetically.

Scope and Contents

This collection contains the research notes created by Donald throughout his professional career. The records are about the early history of the state of Utah and the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints.


Administrative History:

Donald R. Moorman was born July 10, 1931. He earned his B.A. and M.A. from Colorado State College in 1956, and taught high school for six years in the Albuquerque School System. In 1962, Moorman received his Ph.D. from the University of New Mexico. In September of that year he came to Weber State College with his wife Nancy and his three children joining the History department as an assistant professor. In 1969 Moorman became a full professor, a position he retained until his death in 1980.

Moorman was a member of American Historical Association, Western Historical Association, New Mexico Historical Association, and Phi Alpha Theta. He served as the advisor to Sigma Delta Pi in the late 1960’s. He edited several books and wrote many articles. Moorman’s book Camp Floyd and the Mormons: The Utah War was posthumously published by the University of Utah in 1992, after it had been prepared for publication by Moorman’s Weber State University colleague, Gene Session.
