1948
In 1948 and 1949 Utah explored a considerable area of Western British
Columbia and Vancouver Island for iron ore deposits. Rights were secured,
a processing plant and haulage road developed, and ship loading facilities
installed, through which a considerable tonnage of processed magnetite ore
has been produced, most of which has been shipped to Japanese steel mills .
Projects completed or continuing during this period-were:
Electra Tunnel - A project in the amount of $5,653,000 for Pacific Gas
and Electric Company in Amador County, California. The project was
completed in June of 1948 and the contractor was Utah-Morrison-Walsh,
comprised of: Utah Construction Company, Walsh Construction Company,
and Morrison-Knudsen Company, Inc. The tunnel was 43,000 feet long.
Actual construction was effected through subcontracts to each of the three
contractors for definite portions of the tunnels. Utah drove approximately
12,000 feet of the Electra Tunnel from an adit, thereby utilizing two headings
to speed up the operation. The entire tunnel, eleven miles (this includes
West Point Tunnel which was bid separately), was completed in 16 months.
Electra Powerplant in California for Pacific Gas and Electric Company
in the amount of $576,000.
A Thermal Powerplant in Richmond, California, for the Standard Oil
Company of California in the amount of $169,000.
A transmission line in Utah for the Kennecott Copper Corporation in the
amount of $227,500.
Railroad improvements and a new line in Utah for the Kennecott Copper
Corporation in the amount of $423,000.
A haulage tunnel in Utah for the Kennecott Copper Corporation in the
amount of $405,000.
The grading of a plant site in California for the Standard Oil Company of
California in the amount of $158,000.
Food Processing Plant - A project in Lodi, California, in the amount of
$2,441,000. In performance of the contract with General Mills, Inc. for
construction of this cereal manufacturing plant, Utah Construction Company
was called upon to render construction services including the installation
of railroad sidings, public utilities, plumbing and heating facilities, and
owner's equipment; erection of the various structures; and construction of
the road and street facilities. Engineering services included interpretation
of site investigations, design of foundations and structures, and design of
the location and installation of the owner's machinery.
