INTERVIEW SUMMARY K.G. WALLACE WITH LOU KRAAR, FORTUNE May 25, 1977
(From notes taken by Jean M. Goity. No tape recorder was used). Q. What are your areas of responsibilities?
A. KGW outlined his responsibilities as Senior Vice President & Manager -
Australia Division. Q. How did you learn about the merger?
A. Bud Wilson called me at home on a Saturday morning and asked me to come in to the office. Ralph Long, who reports to me was also called in. This must have been just a few days prior to the merger announcement. We were asked to that meeting so that we might consider the impact the merger announcement might have on our Australian operations and how we might communicate it to Australia.
Q. What was your personal reaction to the news?
A. My first personal reaction was of some concern. This was of course before GE communicated to us their views on how Utah might carry on its activities following the merger. As one of the senior officers of a medium-sized company I was concerned about my personal future in a merger situation but now I'm relaxed about that. We have not been totally unaffected by the merger but we have been relatively unaffected on the operations side. For example, there have been virtually no changes in my activities.
Q. What is the company like? What is the corporate personality?
A. In my opinion, I think there is a great deal of pride among those of us who have been with the company for a few years. I think there is an esprit de corps at Utah that you don't find at any mining company I know anything about. I believe this spirit is reflected in new people joining the company. Utah is run with very little ""politics"". All of this is primarily attributable to two things:
