Statewide enrollment cap affects Weber students By TYSON MATT News editor of The Signpost Nine hundred sixty-nine closed classes, many new freshmen and additional students attending off-campus classes have pushed student populationat WSU over 14,000. A state wide enrollment cap has effected WSU. This year the Utah System of Higher Education expected to enroll 7,000 more students than it has allocated funds for. The board of regents feel this issue of underfunding for students is vital to the economic viability of Utah. According to the USHE, this is an issue in which all Utah citizens must become involved in finding long term solutions. He said the availability of classes and admission to WSU will be on a first-come first-serve basis. "It affects the slow," said Smith. "People who register early and pay on time will be affected less," he said. Marie Kotter, vice president of student services, said many students are unaware of the cap. "It amazes me how many people are unaware of it. (the cap) ," Kotter said. 'There really needs to be more publicity so that students are aware of the problem." Kotter said WSU hasn't turned any students away from registering, but instead are directing those students to classes that are being taught off campus Other classes are being offered through the continuing education department. Smith said next year WSU will be requiring higher academic standards of new high school graduates. Students admission eligibility is currently computed by a formula combining ACT scores and GPA to get a index number. For example a student with a GPA of 3.0 and a ACT score of 17 would have an index score of 90. Smith said currently WSU admits students with scores of 90 or better and turns away students with indexes less than 80. The two combinations result in many different index numbers. The Utah System of Higher Education will, "leave no stone unturned," in looking for solutions to this problem and have considered the following alternatives and consequences. Program review New delivery systems Tuition policy Student senate works on faculty preview By SCOTT SHINER Govt, affairs editor of The Signpost For the first time in Weber State History, the student senate is working together as one on a project, according to, Jeff Hatch, senator of the Colleges of Business and Economics. The senate is presently working on their first joint project called the Faculty Preview, which is a survey given to all faculty members and comments from the student body of each professor. When filled out by each faculty member, this survey, which is the first phase of the project, will give a biographical background of the professor (schooling, time at Weber, etc.) and their teaching philosophy (how they test, do they like to lecture, give a lot of outside reading, etc.). This will enable students to match their learning preferences with the kind of professor that will help them get the best possible education. "If you're a freshman, for example, you can look up which professor teaches the style of which you learn the best with," said Hatch The second phase will be the responses from the students. The committee hasn't yet decided how they will accomplish this. By using the Faculty Preview, it will allow each professor talk about himself, and be accompanied by representative comments from the student body. This information will be published in book-form and will be placed at various key locations around the campus to be used as reference material. The College of Education will be the first group tested. "We want to see how they respond. We can adjust the survey to solicit the most informative response possible," Hatch said. Jeni Critchlow, vice president of ASWSU said the preview will be avialable to students when the senate can compile the information from the professors. |Description||Weber's current student newspaper, the Signpost, first appeared on September 29, 1937. For two years prior to that time, campus news was disseminated via announcements posted on a bulletin board known as the "Signpost". As a result, the masthead of the first issue of the paper itself featured a rudimentary wooden sign with the title spelled out in rustic-looking letters. Over the years the paper has been published continuously, though the look, size and style has changed several times.|
