Utah Legislature frowns on education proposal By MARK FORSBERG Signpost government affairs editor At least one of the two higher education bills before the Utah State Legislature is receiving a thumbs down at Weber State University. "Higher Ed uca tion Classroom Teaching Assignments," a senate bill introduced by Senators Howard A. Stephenson and Scott N. Howell, will basically add three hours to each higher education school's average full-time teaching load. University of Utah and Utah State University, which presently average nine class hours per full-time teacher, would increase to 1 2. WSU, which averages 12 hours, would increase to 15. The smaller schools would increase from 15 to 18 hours. v "With the present strain on the budget we need more efficient universi ties,'' said Stephenson. Many universities play different roles in their community and in the state, Stephenson said when explaining the different number of hours for each school. Because the U of U and USU are more research oriented, their teachers are expected to teach fewer hours and concentra te more on writing and study. "In drafting the bill we looked at different missions of universities and their workload," he said. "Some have moreinvolvementinresearchand writing"Increased hours, he said, reflect the university's role. WSU's full-time teachers would receive 15 hours because they are focused more on teaching. The smaller community colleges would receive 18because they arealmost wholly teaching-oriented. The process of reaccreditation for colleges and universities, which takes place every ten years, is now under way at Weber State University. The study will give WSU an'opportunity to find areas of accomplishment and areas which need improvement.According to an outline of the accreditation process provided by Rosemary Conover and an outline of the self study provided by The Northwestern Association of Schools and Colleges, the accreditation process is broken down into three stages. A self study, a visit by an evaluating team and an action by the commission on colleges. According to the document, the self study is conducted by each of the departments on campus and is composed of evaluating performance of faculty, credibility of programs and other information pertinent to the accreditation process, such as the (See SURVEY page 2) TODAY'S jUEWS PORTS After the bubble popped on the WSU tennis team, some question WSU's priorities. |Description||Weber's current student newspaper, the Signpost, first appeared on September 29, 1937. For two years prior to that time, campus news was disseminated via announcements posted on a bulletin board known as the "Signpost". As a result, the masthead of the first issue of the paper itself featured a rudimentary wooden sign with the title spelled out in rustic-looking letters. Over the years the paper has been published continuously, though the look, size and style has changed several times.|
