An equity raise is also being planned to end discrimination in salaries, (photo Increase equity raise will end discrimination by Bonnie Cantwell Staff reporter The faculty will receive a full 8.5 percent salary increase next year, according to Weber State 'Stone' deadline nears All material for First Stone must be submitted no later than 4 p.m. on Friday, April 19 to be considered for publication in the spring quarter issue. First Stone, the creative arts supplement to the Signpost includes materials such as poetry, short stories, photography, art and three dimensional art, reproduced through photography. All written material should be typed, preferrably on a 60-space line for consideration. Students, faculty and staff members may contribute original works to the publication, which will come out May 17. All works used will be returned to the owner at that time. Any comments, criticisms or suggestions for First Stone are welcome. Bishop said the administration is sacrificing funding to other areas to see that the faculty receives the cost of living raise. Blacks request funds; grant of loan refused by Mary Woodhead News and Wire Editor During their meeting on Mon-Executive Council turned down a request by the Black Scholars Union for a loan of $3,000 to bring Eddie Kendricks to perform at Weber State College during Black Emphasis Week. Jess Veasey, advisor to the Black Scholars Union said that they woud need $176 to pay for an artist to come and put on an art show and . $3,000 in advance money to bring Kendricks to WSC. Refund money He added that the union would refund the money after they had received the revenue from the show. The total fee for Kendricks is $6,000. The council pointed out that $300 had already been appropriated for Black Emphasis Week and that could be used to pay for the art show . Veasey then pointed out that Hendricks would be coming on April 11 and would give two He also said women and classified staff members will receive equity raises, hopefully ending all salary discrimination by the end of next year. The only WSC program which received additional funding for this coming year is the Pilot Project. All other areas received funding at last year's level, which is really a decrease because of inflation, said Bishop. Faculty appreciative "I think the faculty are most appreciative of their raises, however they understand we cannot cut back our operational program this far every year to increase their salaries," Bishop commented. Bishop said the college personnel are carefully planning programs for next year. Any new development will be carefully evaluated. "At the present time we are overextended and under financed. We have to establish rigid priorities," he emphasized. The salary increases will be adjusted as much as possible for shows. The tickets for the show would be $5 for singles and $7 for couples. Exclusive rights Brent Johns, academic vice president, said that ASWSC has exclusive rights to concerts, and that the money gained through this concert would not be for the benefit of the entire studentbody. He added that the concert had no backing and that he really didn't think there was enough time to properly advertise the concert. Veasey then asked if that meant that they had no right to give a concert without the approval of the council. Johns answered that yes, since the council would be providing the money, it would be their responsibility to make sure the concert would be both successful economically and in terms of student interest. Mike Stevers, activities vice president, added that "If- you finance it yourselves, you can do what you want but we can't be other discrimination. In the past salary negotiations have caused inequity in the salaries of equally qualified and productive people. Hiring guidelines "We cannot wipe out the market place. Some teachers are harder to get and you have to pay more for them," Bishop explained. But what we need to do is establish hiring guidelines which will establish the salary range for persons with certain qualifications. The only other option is going on a salary schedule, which allows the college no flexibility, eliminating the ability to obtain outstanding people in certain fields, according to Bishop. Bishop emphasized the need to establish a new budgeting system for the state colleges. Other money will be used to equalize the salaries of classified staff members. Weber has a high turnover of classified employees because of their low wages Bishop indicated. He said he hopes to have money to increase these people's salaries. Ml lending out money to every group that asks." Ken Lowe, student services vice president, asked if the council even had the money to lend. Transfer money Becky Sparkman, communications vice president, said that they didn't have the money in concerts but they might be able to transfer the money from somewhere else. Veasey then asked if they were saying they didn't have the money, and when Sparkman responded "No, not in concerts," Veasey said "Thank you," and walked out. As Veasey was leaving, Read Hellewell pointed out to him that more than the money was involved in the decision. Another representative from the Black Scholars Union, Bren-da Foster, told the council that the union was not having the concert for themselves. Gage success Ron Rav added that the Council has a responsibility to gage whether concerts will be successful and that he didn't think Eddie Kendricks would make money Lowe' added that the Council had no legal guarantee that they would get the money back. Hellewell and Stevers both pointed oul that all students can have input into choosing performers (Or the Spring Fever Week concert and that they were welcome to participate in choosing the performers. |Description||Weber's current student newspaper, the Signpost, first appeared on September 29, 1937. For two years prior to that time, campus news was disseminated via announcements posted on a bulletin board known as the "Signpost". As a result, the masthead of the first issue of the paper itself featured a rudimentary wooden sign with the title spelled out in rustic-looking letters. Over the years the paper has been published continuously, though the look, size and style has changed several times.|
