Biographical Note/Historical Note +/-

The Associated Women Students (AWS) was an organization created to provide a way for the female students to socialize, help promote the school activities, and provide a medium for women to express themselves and maintain the social standards. First mention of the organization was in the 1937 Acorn. From approximately 1937-1962, the AWS president was on the Associated Students’ Board of Control. The presidency was elected yearly, with the council being made up of members from the different clubs, organizations, and classes. In 1937, the council was called the Girl’s Council but was called the Women’s Council thereafter. The organization was discontinued in the 1980s.

Throughout the school year, the organization would host dances, seminars, awards, and other social events for the female students to attend. Some of the awards they gave was “Friendliest Girl” and “Most Preferred Man”, which were awarded from 1940s-1970s.
