Donald R. Moorman was born July 10, 1931. He earned his B.A. and M.A. from Colorado State College in 1956, and taught high school for six years in the Albuquerque School System. In 1962, Moorman received his Ph.D. from the University of New Mexico. In September of that year he came to Weber State College with his wife Nancy and his three children joining the History department as an assistant professor. In 1969 Moorman became a full professor, a position he retained until his death in 1980.

Moorman was a member of American Historical Association, Western Historical Association, New Mexico Historical Association, and Phi Alpha Theta. He served as the advisor to Sigma Delta Pi in the late 1960’s. He edited several books and wrote many articles. Moorman’s book Camp Floyd and the Mormons: The Utah War was posthumously published by the University of Utah in 1992, after it had been prepared for publication by Moorman’s Weber State University colleague, Gene Session.

The Donald R. Moorman Research Collection was obtained after Moorman’s death and contains notes on Utahn and Mormon history. There are ten series in the collection including: Brigham Young Correspondence, Brigham Young Journals and Biographical Information, Historian’s Office Journal, Correspondences, Newspapers, Indians/ Office of Indian Affairs, Individuals’ Biographical Information, Military and Camp Floyd, Mormon/ Mountain Meadow Massacre and South West United States.

Brigham Young Correspondence, Brigham Young Journals and Biographical Information, Historian’s Office Journal, Newspapers, are arranged chronologically. Correspondence is listed alphabetically by author’s name, person receiving and thereafter chronologically. Individual Biographical Information, Military and Camp Floyd, Mormon/ Mountain Meadow Massacre and Southwest United States are listed by subject title alphabetically.

The index to the register is a list of references to topics and individuals by last name followed by first name. The index reference number refers to the pages of the register on which the item may be found.

Moorman’s class exams and materials can be found under WA 86/ 60, his student papers under WA 86/ 61, Moorman’s professional files under WA 86/ 62, and there is a set of miscellaneous and incomplete history notes under WA 86/ 63. WA 86/ 64 contains research index card notes on various topics.
