DAVID ECCLES, PRES. AND GEN. MGR. C.W. NIBLEY, SEC. AND TREAS.
OREGON LUMBER COMPANY INCORPORATED
Baker City, Ore., March 12, 1902.
Ogden, Utah. Dear Bro.-
I have just been down to the assessor's office and listed all the property as assessed for 190i, of Oregon Lumber Co, and Sumpter Valley Railway, The total assessment of the Oregon Lumber Co. on all property in and out of city for this year is $20,160, as against $26,475 for year 1900. The total value of land, mill plant and lumber assessed for year 1901, as being in the city limits, is $17,500, as against $1050 for the year 1900.
The total tax as levied for the year 1901 is $1158,62, as against $1212.37 for year 1900, a difference in our favor of $53,75. The amount assessed as being within the city limits for year 1901, as you will notice, is $16,400 greater than for 1900, and the amount of the city tax is 10 mills , hence the increased tax in that particular item is $164. The Sumpter Valley is about $20 additional, your own about $5, additional, a total difference of about $190,
Before Mr. Nibley left, he instructed me to ascertain exactly the increased taxation, for reason of city limit extension, and to deduct the amount from the total tax and tender the sheriff that amount less 3%, in full settlement of taxes. 1 consulted Mr. Rand this morning concerning it all, and he says that the legislature had the power David Eccles, Pres. and Gen. to extend the city limits, and that the city has the power to collect the taxes as assesed, and that he sees no fighting chance, even, in our favor in resisting the payment, and advises us to pay it, rather than enter into suit. I am therefore on the ragged edge of uncertainty until you arrive. In order to get the 3%, taxes must he paid not later than next Saturday, If you cannot be here on that day, wish you would telegraph me what to do.
The mill is running nicely, the repairs on the planer boilers are progressing rapidly.
I hope that you will be able to be here Saturday sure, Yours truly,J.E. Hyde
