New York June 21st 1951 Dear Edith. Here it is the longest day of the year and I am the longest way from home that I am likely to be for some time. New York is certainly treating me well. The weather is wonderful. Fine and bright, but cool and balmy. And we are both feeling well too. My feet are better than they have been for some time. On the train I had no trouble-took a pill the first night, but only because I thought I ought to. We left Washington at noon on Tuesday & arrived here at 4:30 (It was really 1 o'clock ant 5:30) right time. Our reservations at the hotel was waiting for us & we were soon settled. All we did that eve, was to walk over to Radio city and Fifth Avenue, get an ice cream soda and come home to rest. Wednesday was only yesterday, but it seems a long way back, We got word from Arch about the tickets he had arranged for us, and went over to Madison Ave to get them. (All this going and coming is via taxi) The A S C A P office is in a most pretensious new building. We went over to look along Fifth Avenue and spent some time in Tiffany's looking at their china. In the p.m. we went to The Kind and I at the St James theatre. It is a most beautiful show- so colorful and clean and bright. After the show we had our second meal of the day- dinner at the Brass Rail the cost was $9.50 but it was good, In the eve we subsided a little merely walking around the hotel and surroundings. To-day (Thursday) was another day. We went down to the 42nd St pier and boarded a sight-seeing yacht for a 3 hour trip around the Island of Manhattan, A guide pointed out the many many noteworthy places. It was a very fine trip, and pleasant all the way. We went down to 34th St. this p.m. just to see what was going on. We struggled thru Macy's- you would never believe the rush and confusion three is there. There were three policemen and a store usher at the door as we crowded our way out. and they seemed glad to get rid of us. There was one place where $34.00 might be save on a refrigerator. the people were really acting crazy. It must be terrible to be a sales person there. We did not go to Gimball's- we may go there later. We were back at the hotel at 3 p.m. and have taken time to catch up on our baths our writing and the pressing of clothes. (Fern is a good hand at that) We are now dressed to go to South Pacific this eve. We have tickets for a Sat. matinee of Call McMadaw, and for Fri. for the broadcast of Twenty Questions Thou there is the Music Hall to go to and the sight seeing trip, and the Met Art Museum and church on Sunday, and we hope Central Park Sunday p. m.
