Your letter in regard to the charge made in the case of Mrs. Ellen Eccles is received. You have been misinformed in regard to the means of this patient. Instead of being a man of moderate means he is a man worth six million dollars.
For years we have not set a fee before operation, but have based the charge on the extent and character of the operation, the personal responsibility upon the operator and the means and income of the patient. We would charge an ordinary farmer, worth two or three thousand dollars, $250. or $300 for such an operation and this would mean a good part of the year's income. To make such a charge as that to a man who is rated as Mr. Eccles is, and who has an income approxi¬mating a half million dollars a year would be ranh injustice to the people of smaller means. We have insisted and will continue to insist that everybody should pay us alike. It certainly would be manifest injusti
