Durangos famous Iron Mountain At Mexicos largest seaport on its Pacific Coast and 178 miles inland at the countrys famous Iron Mountain, known as Cerro Del Mercado, 22-ton Euclids are carry-ing out tough and interesting tasks. Completing a breakwater to finish the harbor at Mazatlan, ten Eucs are placing 850,000 tons of rock of which approximately 25% consists of boulders weighing 15 to 25 tons each. The job is being done by Cia. Utah, S.A. Iron Mountain, located a mile from the center of the city of Durango, rises some 600 feet above surrounding plains and is composed almost totally of iron containing an ore of 60 to 67% purity. The mountain is a mile in length of about 2,000 feet wide, its mass estimated at 600,000,000 tons. Its depth is not known. Cerro Del Mercado, S.A., the operating company, has mined eight million tons of ore in the past 30 years, most of which was taken out on burros. Two years ago the mine was mechanized and four Eucs put on the job to do the hauling. Material varies from fine powder to five inches in size. Placing 15-to 25-ton boulders in breakwater.
