Biographical Note/Historical Note +/-

The Modern Literature Club was a women’s organization that was founded in 1924. Mrs. Thatcher was the first president of the Club with charter members including Mrs. Hans Aabel, Mrs. J.S. Allen, and Mrs. F.C. Hargreaves. The Club has a group of officers that include a President, Vice-President, Recording Secretary/Corresponding Secretary (one person), Treasurer, and Historian who are elected at the first meeting in April each year. When the club was first organized the membership was restricted to seventeen members and in 1994 the membership was decreased to sixteen with an allowance for two non-active members. Each year monthly dues were collected. In the 1950s the yearly dues for the Club were five dollars and by the 1990s the dues had gone up to ten dollars. In order to join the Club, a new member had to be unanimously voted in by the current members.
