Fd 1 Records Sept. 5, 1996-2007 Biographical Note/Historical Note +/-The Modern Literature Club was a women’s organization that was founded in 1924. Mrs. Thatcher was the first president of the Club with charter members including Mrs. Hans Aabel, Mrs. J.S. Allen, and Mrs. F.C. Hargreaves. The Club has a group of officers that include a President, Vice-President, Recording Secretary/Corresponding Secretary (one person), Treasurer, and Historian who are elected at the first meeting in April each year. When the club was first organized the membership was restricted to seventeen members and in 1994 the membership was decreased to sixteen with an allowance for two non-active members. Each year monthly dues were collected. In the 1950s the yearly dues for the Club were five dollars and by the 1990s the dues had gone up to ten dollars. In order to join the Club, a new member had to be unanimously voted in by the current members. Content Description +/-The Modern Literature Club held programs twice a month with yearly themes like “Creative Geniuses in the Field of Literature”, “The Study of Great Artists”, and “Biographies and Autobiographies”. The Club also discussed “short topics” at the program meetings that lasted about five to ten minutes and covered topics like leaders of the day, surveys of world events, famous authors, Nobel prize winners, etc. Special events were held each year and included parties for club members and husbands, birthday breakfasts for members, and trips to museums and exhibits.
