Weber County (Utah)

Arlo Mueller shares his experiences as a veteran in the Marine Corps. Mueller voluntarily enlisted in the Marines in 1942 and served in World War II with the Marine Air Squadron as a guard and an anti-aircraft machine gun operator. After separating from the military in 1945, he became a member of the Ogden Fire Department from which he retired in 1968. He then worked as a fire inspector at Hill Field and retired in 1975. The interview took place on March 12, 2013.

 

Betty Ott, wife of Layton P. Ott, shares details of Layton's love of astronomy and physics and his work in science, including naming Weber State University's Ott Planetarium. The Ott Planetarium has received NASA awards as well as local and regional recognition due to their generous support. The interview took place on November 7, 2011.

Vern C. Parker discusses conditions during the Depression, including entertainment, the Ogden State Bank, the Weber Central Dairy, and growing sugar beets and gathering salt from the Great Salt Lake for additional cash. The interview took place circa 1960s.

Roy C. Phipps recalls working in the baggage department for the railroad during the Depression, as well as prices for rent and recreation. He also discusses the WPA government programs. The interview took place circa 1960s.

Samuel C. Powell discusses the failure of the Ogden State Bank during the Depression, his experiences as attorney for the Utah Construction Company, aiding Heber J. Grant in saving the LDS Church's bank, and the building of the Ogden Arsenal and the Defense Depot. The interview took place circa 1960s.

David Prevedel talks about his grandparents coming to Ogden from Northern Italy and Austria for abetter life, and what they did to keep their Tyrolean heritage alive. The interview took place November 18, 2014.
