Ogden (Utah)

Kurt Anderson discusses his knowledge and experience with the historic Ogden Stockyards and the memories he has of his father and the Stockyards. He discusses the Golden Spike Coliseum, his grandfather’s discovery of an opium den and tunnels under 25th Street, and the economic effects of the Stockyards. The interview took place on March 25, 2015.

Dr. Anderson recalls his education as a physician and beginning a private practice during the Depression. He practiced for the Union Pacific and Southern Pacific Railroads, and for the Magna smelters, and also covered local doctors’ practices while they were on vacation. He describes taking produce for pay, paying house calls, and the closing of the Grantsville Deseret Bank. He compares early medical practice to modern practice, including the threat of malpractice lawsuits. The interview took place circa 1960s.

David Aoki discusses his experience with owning Dave's Barber Shop on 25th Street in Ogden. He was the first Japanese business owner to obtain a license during World War II, and he mentions his loaning of money to criminals during the 1940s for robbery protection. The interview took place on October 22, 2013.

Sally Arway discusses her career as a Librarian at Weber State University from 1962 to 1991. The interview took place on November 5, 2007.

H. DeWayne Ashmead, President and CEO of Albion Laboratories, Inc., shares stories about his life, including his childhood, his education, the history of Albion, Inc., his family, and his partnership with Weber State University. DeWayne discusses in detail his father and the history of the Albion minerals business. DeWayne also expands on his background in joining and developing the company. The interview took place on October 22 and 29 and November 26, 2012.

This is an oral history with Barbara Avondet, conducted on July 20, 2017 in her home in Ogden, Utah by Lorrie Rands. Barbara discusses her life and her memories involving World War II. Michael Ballif, the video technician, is also present during this interview.

Mike Bachman, owner of Mike Bachman Plumbing in Ogden, shares his memories of the historic Ogden Stockyards. He describes his business venture selling manure from the Stockyards for use on lawns and gardens. He mentions the loss of the Coliseum to fire near his business.
